A Reading Township man is at the University of Michigan Medical Center after being shot early Sunday morning.

Hillsdale County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call of a shooting at 2800 Balcom Road just after 4:30 AM, where they found 54-year-old Stephen Patrick Wertz of Reading on the house’s deck with a gunshot wound in his torso.

As of Tuesday morning, Wertz remains in critical condition at the University of Michigan’s Burn and Trauma Unit in Ann Arbor.

Deputies arrested 55-year-old Tamra Jo Vanbuskirk as the suspect at the scene. She’s currently in the Hillsdale County jail on charges of assault with intent to commit murder, felony firearm, and possession of a firearm while intoxicated. According to the Hillsdale Daily News, she is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon.

Hillsdale County Prosecutor Neal Brady says Vanbuskirk has not been interviewed because she hadn’t decided yet whether or not to consult an attorney.

Brady says there was apparently a physical altercation of some kind leading up to the shooting.

Authorities continue to investigate, and we’ll bring you more information as it becomes available.
